No putts about it

-

A DODGY set of rental clubs has solved the putting puzzle for Curlewis golf star Deyen Lawson.

Lawson couldn’t buy a putt at the Victorian Open, missing the cut in the process.

Then, in the lead-up to the World Super 6 Perth, came the light bulb moment.

Lawson’s partner Ali Orchard borrowed a set of lefthanded clubs for a practice round they were set to play.

With the clubs not the greatest, she decided to use Lawson’s putter.

“Ali picked it (the putter) up and worked out the loft had changed on it,” Lawson said.

“I was actually using a putter that was slightly bent and had no loft on it. I got a new putter in Perth … so it was lucky Ali picked up on that.

“Once she said it I looked at it and was like ‘How did I not notice that?’

It just wasn’t rolling properly … at the Vic Open I had rolled it the worst I’ve ever rolled it for as long as I could remember. I got a new one in Perth and the roll just changed instantly and my caddie just looked at me … it was a relief.”

The European Tour player suspects his putter was damaged during his Dubai trip, where he was practising in the lead-up to the Victorian Open.

Lawson went on to make the weekend at the World Super 6, but missed the top 24 cut when the tournament went to match play in the final round.

Lawson tees it up this week at the $150,000 Queensland PGA at City Golf Club Toowoomba. The international quality of the field drops off for Queensland, with the championship not co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

“The game feels good. You just need to go out and keep working on what you’re doing and trust what you’re doing,” he said.
