Shock kitten drain dumping

- TAMARA McDONALD

AN animal rescue group has voiced its disgust after two newborn kittens — one dead — were found dumped in a drain on the Bellarine Peninsula.

One-day-old Purrcy, pictured, was found by two children in a Portarlington drain in a sealed plastic bag last week. His brother lay dead next to him.

Geelong Animal Rescue director Jordan Barker said the incident was “really unfortunate”, with the rescue group taking to social media to slam the dumping of animals as “illegal, amoral and cruel”.

“This isn’t super uncommon either for us,” Mrs Barker said. “You see a lot of traumatising incidents in rescue. It does take its toll . . . you don’t want to spread that distress, but we do feel this is something people need to be aware of. Dumping animals isn’t an option.”

Purrcy, who is now with a foster carer, was found after the children passing by heard his cries.

“Even at a day old he had an amazing set of lungs on him,” Mrs Barker said.

Geelong Animal Welfare Society head vet David Pullen urged anyone who found a lost or stray animal to contact their council or bring the animal to GAWS.

“We’d also encourage any member of the public with an unwanted litter of animals to bring them into GAWS so that we can help them find their forever home,” Dr Pullen said.
