From top down, it’s all locked in

IT looks like the last couple of weeks of midweek pennant are just going to go by the numbers.

This week the games for the most part were won by sides in the four with no possible changes coming to the makeup of the finals.

Ocean Grove will play Torquay and Queenscliff will play City of Geelong.

At the bottom of the table Ocean Grove 2 won its game against RSL to move up to eighth but may still be in jeopardy of dropping to ninth or 10th if it loses next week to Queenscliff.

St Leonards’ win over Leopold helped its cause to avoid the bottom two places.

Those sitting at the bottom, Leopold and Highton, have a mathematical chance to lift, but they would need to get all 16 points each and, based on form, that is not likely.

In the game at City of Geelong the visiting Queenscliff won by a comfortable 17 shots.

Spokesman Gary Warren said the side was leading overall for most of the day.

Down at Torquay the home side was playing fifth-placed Lara. While the result was not going to make a difference to the final, Torquay left nothing to chance, powering to a 47shot win.

Spokeswoman Sandra Skene was very happy with the side’s performance on the day, especially the fightback from Lyn Kitchin’s rink, which was trailing going into the last and down on the head.

Skene said Kitchin played a great bowl to get shots for and win and didn’t need to play her last bowl after Lara skip Sherilyn Tump missed with the second bowl, to get Torquay a full 16 points.

In Division 2, Clifton Springs was intent on getting a home win over Queenscliff to cement top spot.

Spokesman Noel Menner said the side was down early with all three rinks behind together at times.

But it held strong after the break, dropping just one rink by three shots to claim victory overall by 26 shots.

With Belmont getting all 16 points over Bannockburn and Geelong Cement losing by seven shots to Point Lonsdale, the second position on the ladder that Cement holds is now within reach of Belmont to give it the double chance final.

But Belmont will be hosting Clifton Springs and although the game may go Belmont’s way as it has the home green advantage, the chance of it getting the required differential will not be easy.

Geelong Cement is playing sixth-placed Torquay and will be looking for a minimum of four points to ensure it holds second place.
