Bews’ Roos rue the one that got away

- JOSH CONWAY

ANGLESEA was left to lament a sloppy third quarter that proved costly in its 14point loss to Modewarre on Saturday.

Despite a spirited comeback in the final quarter, the Roos were coming from too far back and eventually fell short, 13.8 (86) to 14.16 (100), at Community Bank Oval.

Anglesea assistant coach Andrew Bews described the result as “one that got away” against a high-quality opponent.

To make matters worse for the Roos, off-season recruit Zane Vail made it through just two quarters in his first game for the club before succumbing to a suspected groin injury.

Anglesea took 22 minutes to even score in a four-goal-toone third term before the Warriors took all the momentum into the final change following a goal after the three-quartertime siren from Bill Hansen that increased the margin to 18 points.

However, Anglesea spearhead Jordan Erskine kicked two goals in a row to make it five for the match before goals to impressive wingmen Jack Rice and Jacob Nolan brought the margin back to eight points, but the Roos were coming from too far back to pinch victory. “We were static in our attack in that quarter and probably shot ourselves in the foot a little bit, but they made it difficult for us,” Bews said.

“We just didn’t quite get it right in the third quarter, and that was probably the crunch time of the game.

“We got our system working in the last and gave ourselves a chance, but unfortunately a little too late.”

Bews blasted the defence with an old-fashioned spray at the final change following a quarter where Modewarre could have put the game away, kicking 4.3.

Anglesea had its own kickable chances deep into the last, but Erskine and Blake Grant were unable to convert.

“We had a pretty serious conversation at three-quartertime with the backs,” Bews said. “They allowed some things to happen and I assure you they’ll never do it again.

“Was it one that got away? Absolutely it is when you get close and don’t get there. But we were playing a good side and we’re proud of the efforts.”

Ruckman Vail didn’t reappear after halftime after engaging in an intriguing battle with John Meesen.

“He had it a few weeks back and it’s a recurrence of that again. We’ll let the medics determine it,” Bews said.
