Seagulls crush Torquay

- MICHAEL ALVARO

REIGNING Division 2 premier Barwon Heads is on the board in Division 1, comfortably accounting for Torquay at Howard Harmer Oval yesterday.

Centre-half-forward star Caitlyn Carter was instrumental in the win, reeling in a raft of contested pack marks to set the tone for her side, while Emma Allen booted four goals.

Seagulls coach Angus Christian said the 16.17 (113) to 1.0 (6) win was “great reward for effort” for his team, with marked improvements made from last week’s loss to St Marys.

“Our structures were much better,” Christian said.

“We weren’t all in at the ball, we had some people waiting out … things just fell our way a little bit today, but the voice was better, our structure and the run from the girls was really good and their defensive pressure was excellent as well.”

Christian labelled Carter’s overhead marks as “defining moments” in the game, with the likes of Rahni AndreeJansz running hard to lend a hand in crashing the packs, while Caitlin Lewis was strong on the opposite wing.

The home side’s ability to move the ball quickly and take the game on was also a noticeable difference from last week, and Christian says it took a full-team effort to overcome the improving Tigers, while also lauding the newcomers’ spirit.

“(It was) a pretty good team effort I have to say. I know Torquay’s only in their first year, but it certainly didn’t feel like a walkover and there were some really strong contests,” Christian said.

“I know they got beaten last week but they will improve — I think already they’re quite a decent side but they’ll get better as the year goes on.”

The Seagulls are set to face a winless Ocean Grove in Round 3 and Christian said his side was looking forward to the challenge.

“(Ocean Grove) were probably one of our strongest rivals last year so no doubt they would’ve improved as well so we can’t wait,” he said. “The girls are really loving their footy at the moment and we’re very eager to get out there.”
