AUSTRALIANS STUMBLE

- MICHAEL WARNER

AUSTRALIA’S US Masters hopes took a dive on Augusta’s gettable 15th early yesterday.

Co-leaders at the start of the third round, Adam Scott and Jason Day both stumbled at the par-five.

Day found the pond and made double-bogey, while Scott failed to capitalise on a perfect drive by overcooking a chip and blocking his birdie putt.

Scott trailed third round leader, Italy’s Francesco Molinari (13 under), by six shots with Day seven back.

Americans Tiger Woods and Tony Finau were two behind Molinari.

The Masters was due to be decided early today after officials brought tee times forward due to expected storms.

“That was just a poor mental error,” Day said of his rinsed shot.

“I probably should have calculated a little bit more distance behind the pin. I was trying to be a little bit too overly aggressive to that pin location to get a birdie, at least, on the par-fives.”

Scott said a four-shot deficit was more realistic to chase down. “Four you’d feel like you’ve got a good chance,” Scott said.
