Sharks men too strong

- GEOFF DAVIE

GEELONG continued its bright start to the Vic League 1 men’s hockey season with a 5-0 win yesterday against new side North West Lightning at the State Hockey Centre.

The Sharks struck early with a penalty corner conversion via Liam Kerr Nelson and, despite being kept to that single goal to half-time, cracked the game open in the second half.

Third quarter goals to Max Ferrier (corner, 36 minutes) and Kerr Nelson’s second (50) from a field goal, ensured the Bendigo-based Lightning was shut out of the contest. Lachie Hannah (57) and Jayden Schram (62) stepped up with further field goals in the fourth quarter.

The win, following its 4-1 season opener against Monash Uni, has Geelong sitting well at the Easter break, with its next match away to Yarra Valley on April 27.

Geelong’s Premier League women lost 5-2 to Essendon at Essendon yesterday.

While competitive, Geelong failed to make the most of its chances and let a couple of easy goals through.

The Sharks trailed 4-0 early in the third quarter before goals from Kelsey Ratcliffe (46 minutes) and Eliza Flanagan (55). Both were among Geelong’s best along with Jess Snaize.

Geelong is at home to Powerhouse St Kilda next round (April 27, 2pm).
