Goalless worries for flat Warriors

- TAS MAVRIDIS

THE North Geelong Warriors’ scoring rut continued, held goalless by bottom-placed Whittlesea Ranges at Epping Stadium on Saturday.

The 0-0 draw marked the third game in a row the Warriors have failed to score a goal, leaving coach James Coutts angry with his side’s current run of form.

“It was not good enough, the final ball was not good enough, the end product was not good enough, the attitude was not good enough,” Coutts said after their winless run was extended to four games.

The Warriors had their chances to break the deadlock, with Coutts himself having a golden opportunity 16 minutes into the opening half and Lachie Weier hitting the crossbar in the 90th minute.

Despite the chances, Coutts lamented his side’s slow ball movement that prevented his team taking control against the relegation candidates.

“The execution across the park was poor we try to play a certain way, but we were not good enough today,” Coutts said. “We did not execute what we do week in week out in training, the final ball and finishing was not good enough by any of us, myself included.

“I do not know how many opportunities we created. I do not know how many we need to create to win games but today was not good enough in the final third in particular.

“Even our build up play was not as good as it should have been, it was just a really disappointing afternoon.”

The Warriors will look to regroup before their next game against Melbourne City at Elcho Park next Saturday, with Coutts ready to lead a turnaround in form.

“We know we can play so much better than that, we need to go away work better and harder and dust ourselves off for next week,” he said.

“In front of goal we just have to keep working — there is no other way.

“The players have to look at themselves in the mirror and ask if they are doing enough.

“Everyone at this level in particular have got a lot areas they can improve on and a lot of areas they can enhance and keep working on.”
