Labor briefs Committee for Geelong

- HARRISON TIPPET

THE Geelong region’s federal election candidates for the Labor Party have fronted one of the city’s key advocacy groups to outline their plans for the region under a Labor government.

Corio MP Richard Marles and Corangamite candidate Libby Coker spoke at a member briefing for the Committee for Geelong yesterday.

Mr Marles said access to health services, schooling, Newstart and the aged pension were key concerns of his constituents in the north.

“We need to develop policy that leaves no one behind,” he said.

“We need to make sure people can access bulk-billing at the doctors, that schools are properly funded, and that social services such as Newstart and the aged pension are a proper safety net.”

“There is huge difference between us and the Liberals on funding our schools, hospitals and tackling the cost of living.”

While the Committee for Geelong declined to share details of the briefing, social media activity from members gave insight into some of the pointed questions directed at the Labor duo.

Committee chief executive Jennifer Cromarty tweeted Ms Coker’s push to address the gender pay gap and family violence, as well as investing in the future of the region’s youth.

Ms Cromarty also tweeted that City of Greater Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood questioned Mr Marles about funding for the Northern ARC project.

“@RichardMarlesMP says he’s lobbying for it and will continue supporting as No.1 priority,” she tweeted.
