Self-directed care made easy
NEW DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY IS ADVANCING THE WAY NDIS PARTICIPANTS CAN CONTROL THEIR OWN CARE PROGRAM
AN online marketplace for self-directed care and support.
That’s the bright idea behind online support platform Mable.
The simple system offers a familiar search function on the landing page of the website.
First, you enter your location.
Then, a list of independent support workers in the relevant area pops up.
Participants can then choose the workers and services that suit their interests and needs.
Furthermore, the safeguarding checks and balances are covered.
NDIS participants can rest assured that administration processes of approving timesheets, insurance arranged on behalf of workers and police and key qualification checks are all taken care of.
“It’s a platform where you can easily build your own support team,” said Toni Brown, Mable’s community engagement manager for Geelong.
While the online connection service sounds new, Mable has actually been in operation throughout Australia for five years.
Ms Brown said the platform encouraged NDIS funding recipients to take control of their support program.
She said users of the marketplace ranged from people living with disability, including young families, to those who were ageing and wanting to remain living independently at home.
Once participants and independent workers connect, rates can be negotiated.
The same goes for times, dates, duration and nature of support.
And why stop at one support person? You can create a tailored team of professionals based on what’s important to you. You can also invite people you know to join Mable.
“You’re in control of who supports you and when; it’s so empowering” Ms Brown said.
Support workers can also find equal value and choice in Mable.
Ms Brown said the marketplace also enabled independent workers to choose who they supported, the services they offered, and when and what they charge. It’s equally empowering for them and as a result the marketplace is attracting diverse people and services.
And direct connections, through the site means the clients can pay less while workers can earn more.
“It helps keeps NDIS funding in the local community,” she said.
As the NDIS matures, participants are building their confidence to explore their support options and goals.
“They might start small by looking for an independent worker on Mable to do something different on a weekend or they might know exactly what they are looking for and are ready to take full control of their supports,” she said.
