Tigers ‘fresh’ for big match

- DAMIEN RACTLIFFE

MODEWARRE co- coach Seamus Orr believes Torquay is “back”, as his side looks to claim Good Friday bragging rights at Spring Creek Reserve tonight.

Dom Gleeson’s Tigers shape as one of the improved sides in the BFL this year after smashing Geelong Amateur in Round 1 before pushing Barwon Heads last weekend.

Orr said the Tigers looked freshened up and dangerous so far this season.

“You add in some different personnel, they can freshen a group, they bring new ideas, a little bit of freedom in the way they play,” he said.

“We know the game can be a bit structured at times, so it just looks like they’re back to having fun and playing pretty fast, free-flowing footy.

“But when you retain your coach, Dom’s been at the club for an extended period of time now, so they’ll probably play quite similar to the way they have in the last few years.”

The reigning premier dropped both encounters to Torquay in 2018 in matches plagued by inaccurate kicking.

“We lost the Round 1 game and then at home later in the year with some inaccurate kicking, which was our tale last year — I think we lost about five games you could have put down to that,” Orr said.

“We enjoy the rivalry. DRYSDALE B/ HEADS NEWCOMB ANGLESEA G/AMATEUR W LD 200 200 200 1 10 1 10 % Pts 165.44 8 160.68 8 106.3 8 200.81 4 128.76 4 There’s always a little bit of feeling in those games, obviously being pretty close geographically, so I’ve got a lot of respect for Dom and the Torquay boys. I’m looking forward to it.”

Nathan Ablett remains on the sidelines battling an ongoing ankle injury and is not due back for another three to four weeks.

Mitch Fisher (soreness) returns for Modewarre, while Cody Grant lines up for his first game in Warriors colours this season after missing the opening two games with a hamstring injury.

“We get an outside midfielder and ‘ Fish’ can be an inside midfielder or a forward,” Orr said.

“If you can include someone like Mitch Fisher into the team, I personally think he’s one of the best players in the competition, so it gives us pretty good confidence we can kick the ball to him and let him go to work one-on-one.”
