City stars commit despite demotion
GEELONG City has confirmed stars Richie Oliver and Pat Richards will remain with the club, despite its relegation to Division 2.
In a statement, the Sharks said they were disappointed to be dumped from GCA1, while moving to allay fears Oliver and Richards would move on.
“While we don’t agree with the decision due to the previous precedent set and the lack of transparency of the allocated points system, we accept the decision,” the club statement said.
“We relish the opportunity and challenge in front of us and look forward to hitting the ground running with a full playing squad and in the City way, positive and aggressive.”
Despite finishing last in the rolling two-year club assessment, City appeared likely to remain in GCA1 when Murgheboluc — the club first in line for promotion — hinted at remaining in Division 2.
But the Frogs had a change of heart, opting to move into GCA1 and subsequently pushing the Sharks down in GCA2.
Oliver, arguably the GCA’s best batsman, only learnt of the news last night when he woke up in England.
But he has committed to playing GCA2 cricket, according to the club, while Richards will also fulfil his promise to play at Richmond Crescent after crossing from GCA1 club Leopold just weeks ago.
“We confirm that both Richie Oliver and recent signing Pat Richards have reconfirmed for next season,” the club statement continued.
“We will continue to actively encourage and promote our young cricketers to play the highest standard possible, as we currently have more players in the top grades of the Geelong Cricket Club than any other club in Geelong.
“In the coming months our change rooms are being redeveloped and we are actively seeking other opportunities to grow our club.
“In summary, we are organised and prepared for this outcome and will have some more exciting announcements in the near future.”
