CORIO CANDIDATE DUMPED ALREADY?
ELECTION DISENDORSEMENT FEAR:
UNION-SUPPORTING Liberal candidate for Corio Murray Angus was last night facing disendorsement for not following Liberal party rules.
The party was last night expected to disendorse Mr Angus, who was preselected to stand for Corio last week, over “a breach of internal procedures”.
Earlier in the day Mr Angus said he had nicknamed his poll bid the WD-40 campaign as he looked to unstick sitting MP Richard Marles, who holds a near 10 per cent majority.
He said his goal was to make Corio a marginal seat so the billions in election pledges flowing to Corangamite pass to Corio.
“I wanted to call my campaign WD-40,” he said. “When you spray WD-40 on rust, it breaks those chains doesn’t it?”
Mr Angus, who is married to Heather and has two children and six grandchildren, said he printed off Liberal and Labor values before plumping for the former party.
“I understand the concept of a piece of cloth, the Budget is a piece of cloth,” he said.
“You can’t increase that piece of cloth and it’s got to be cut in different ways.
“Government’s responsibilities is to cut that cloth according to how they feel.
“I think the Liberals recognise that to do that you need a solid economy.”
Mr Angus studied accounting part-time and worked for 42 years in the public and private sector as a financial and budget manager and business project manager.
He also worked as a catering manager and an engineering manager, but does not consider himself “working class”.
“I’ve listened to the people and we’ve got to make a good stand (in Corio),” he said.
“The little machine is running along, it’s happening.”
He said he was looking forward to driving his 1987 Mercedes, which he bought for $500, around the streets of Corio as he campaigned.
“We’re printing the information and I’ll get the official call flutes and signs soon,” he said.
