Modda aim to go four in a row

- LACHIE YOUNG

MODEWARRE will be aiming for its fourth straight win tomorrow, but A-grade coach Damian Stephenson says his side will need to be at its best to upset the in-form Torquay at Mt Moriac Reserve.

Since falling to Geelong Amateur at the start of the month, the Warriors have defeated Anglesea (76-16), Queenscliff (45-30) and Barwon Heads (42-29) to keep in touching distance of the top three.

Stephenson said the chance to test themselves against the Tigers would help give a clear picture of where they were at heading into the final third of the season.

“It will be a good game and we’re looking forward to it,” Stephenson said.

“We have won three in a row, and a couple of those weren’t against top five teams, but it was good to get those and have a chance to put into practice some of the things we have been talking about through the year.

“The game against Barwon Heads was a good one to win because as you start to build some momentum, until you play some of those top teams you don’t know exactly how you are going.

“So to get a good win against Barwon Heads was great and again we have another challenge this week, which looks like it is going to be a real tough one based on last weekend’s result.”

Torquay knocked off ladder-leader Geelong Amateur by 12 goals last week, sending a warning to the competition that this year’s premiership is no foregone conclusion.

But Stephenson is all too aware of the threat the Tigers pose after their Round 3 clash.

“Their defensive pressure was intense already back then and I think that has probably only increased as they have worked on it more in the season,” he said.

“I didn’t get to see the game against Ammos but looking at the score and the results I would imagine they have got a lot of the ball back off them going by the extra scoring shots they have had.

“So I imagine we are going to be coming up against some pretty intense defence like we did in Round 3.

“We probably weren’t that prepared early in the season and they are a very strong team across every line and we got a bit exposed at both ends of the court.”
