Rebuild lands design award for Southern Star
GEELONG’S Southern Star Windows has underlined its ability to service custom home designs by winning a national design award.
The Australian Glass and Window Association design award was for the North Geelong company’s work on the rebuild of a Dereel home destroyed by bushfire in 2013.
Primarily known as a supplier to volume builders, Southern Star Windows offers a range of products to suit a variety of home designs from entry level to architectural, with products in each range able to be customised.
The Dereel job required the Southern Star team to provide window and door solutions to maximise integration with the home’s environment and optimise ventilation, energy efficiency, functionality and view.
In a bespoke design to meet the brief, each window was set back in an aluminium shroud at the exterior.
Southern Star Group marketing manager Theresa Best said that while the business was started in 2002 to produce high-volume aluminium windows and doors, it had evolved to meet modern design expectations.
“Seventeen years on and windows and doors are no longer the basic necessity of the past but have become a coveted design and lifestyle element, and, more importantly, a vital factor in contributing to the energy efficiency and acoustic performance of a home,” Ms Best said.
“These days bi-fold servery windows, stylish bi-fold doors, expansive stacking sliding doors, sashless windows, fixed panels and louvres create lifestyle options and seamless transitions from indoor to out, and windows and doors have evolved into a versatile design element that eliminate visual barriers between internal and external living spaces.”
She said Southern Star had specialists in research, development and design and was focused on developing products to meet the needs of more bespoke, custom home designs, while ensuring that standard products also delivered on design, efficiency and functionality.
