SINS OF THE FATHERS DON’T UNDO GOOD WORKS

-

I WOULD like to respond to Michael J Gamble’s letter “Confession Stance Calls For Tax Review” (GA 21/9).

Firstly, I’m not denying the horrific and shameful sexual and physical abuse which has been inflicted on innocent children by members of the clergy of the Catholic Church over many years.

However, when Mr Gamble calls for a review of the church’s tax exempt status, I invite him to look into the work done by the charitable organisations within the church, some of which are St Vincent de Paul, CatholicCare and Caritas, which contribute to the welfare and support of thousands of people locally, in wider Australia and overseas.

The money which maintains these charities is all raised within Catholic churches and schools, through personal donations, op-shops, specific campaigns, physical work and many other fundraising efforts. Members of Catholic churches work with other churches supporting homeless people, asylum seekers, low income earners and any other people who ask for help.

Students from our four Catholic secondary schools in Geelong (as well as other schools), work in programs in the local community, on projects raising money and awareness for various charitable causes and some students volunteer their holiday time working overseas in areas of need.

So, Mr Gamble, when you refer to the Catholic Church as a religious business enterprise, please consider how much it contributes to communities in Australia and overseas, through employment, education, heathcare, community care and charitable works.
