Golf carnival success

- LACHIE YOUNG

TORQUAY Golf Club has set a new benchmark for its Golf Week carnival ahead of its centenary next year.

Club president Greg Libbis said the week was the biggest on the burgeoning calendar and added that Torquay would look to bring more events to the spectacle in 2020.

“We had a great week and we had just over 1000 rounds for the week, which is a record for our golf club,” Libbis said.

“All in all it is a very important week on our calendar. We get a lot of visitors who come to the club annually, and we had a lot of new visitors this year for the first time who gave the course a very good wrap.

“With the centenary coming on in 2020 we are looking forward to an even bigger and better event to celebrate that, so we will have an open day next February and then we will have seven or eight events programmed into the centenary.”

East Geelong golfer Chris Chapman took out the men’s open trophy with a score of 141 across his two rounds, while earlier in the week Mandy Buckley shot 84 off the stick to take bragging rights in the women’s major event.

Libbis said a third of rounds played were by visitors to Torquay.

“We had full fields the whole week and there were still people trying to get in but we didn’t have the spaces available,” he said. “On Monday we had 192 play in an Ambrose event, and we had a lot of people from Buninyong, some groups from Warrnambool and then Rich River and Ballarat and along the Surf Coast area as well.

“There were some pretty good golfers among them too and we probably had more than 300 rounds played by outside guests.”
