Women stand ready to repel the raiders from Ballarat
THIRTY-TWO of Geelong’s best female bowlers will take to the Geelong Bowls Club greens today vying to retain the Page and Webster shields.
The annual match-up between the Ballarat Bowls Division and Geelong Bowls Region is the final chance players have to impress selectors before their region teams are selected for April’s state region championships.
Geelong claimed both shields last year and Geelong chair of selection Kaye Robison is confident.
“We won both last year, so we are looking forward to replicating that effort,” Robison said.
The
Geelong selectors chose the 32 players based on ability, consistent output and past performances.
“Normally we would select 96 players, but Ballarat cut the overall numbers back to eight teams of four,” she said.
“Two years ago, our Geelong ladies went all the way in claiming the state championship for region teams at Swan Hill.
“This is our chance to look at the players before we cut it back to 12 for the region championships.”
Queenscliff star Di Roberts will be in charge of one rink, while City of Geelong’s state over-60s representative Veronica Kelly will also take the reins of a four.
Ocean Grove’s Faye Richardson and Torquay’s Karen
Harrington have been given skipper’s roles, along with Highton’s Belinda Koek, Clifton Springs’ Rosemary Sexton, Ocean Grove’s Jo Whitehead and St Leonards’ 2018 Champion of Champions Robyn Michael.
Play starts at 10am.
