No memory of knife night

- OLIVIA SHYING

A 21-YEAR-old man who scaled a 6m-high soccer fence while holding a knife said his drink was spiked and that he couldn’t remember the incident.

Okuj Ajak was arrested by police after officers raided his house and seized 3.7 grams of cannabis.

Ajak pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis at the Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard Ajak was walking around the Leisurelink Centre car park at night when passersby noticed him behaving erratically. Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Jacki Davis said Ajak, who police claimed had consumed cannabis, armed himself with a small fishing knife and started scaling a large fence.

The court heard soccer players were training on the field when they spotted Ajak and huddled together.

Ajak ran onto the field, dropped the knife and went and sat down on a nearby bench before leaving.

Ajak’s lawyer Bill Sizeland said his client admitted to being a cannabis user but said he believed his drink had been spiked on the night of the incident.

“He can’t recall the incident,” Mr Sizeland said.

The lawyer said his client had bought the small fishing knife from a $2 shop.

Mr Sizeland said his client had since moved away from Geelong and was now living in Craigieburn with his sister.

Through his lawyer Ajak said he no longer used drugs and was now looking for work.

Magistrate Julie Grainger urged Ajak to find a purpose for his life.

Ms Grainger fined Ajak $500 without conviction.
