THE Geelong Buccaneers junior varsity team has done the unthinkable, reaching the Vic Bowl championship game in its inaugural season.

Gridiron Victoria only introduced the under-15s competition in 2017, with the Buccaneers entering a side for the first time two years later.

Geelong lost just one of six games in the regular season and finished on top of the ladder before travelling to Reservoir last weekend to take on the Peninsula Sharks in the semi-finals.

The Sharks scored the first touchdown of the game but an interception on the two-point conversion and a huge run by Geelong’s defence allowed it to steal the two points and get on the scoreboard.

The Buccaneers went on to score a further two unanswered touchdowns to secure a 14-6 win and move to the Vic Bowl.

Head coach Daniel Noonan said his side had shown vast improvement across the course of the season, which had played a significant role in the Buccaneers reaching the Bowl.

“We have kids that travel all the way from Timboon to train and play with us each week,” Noonan said.

“This team is committed and has improved so much over the season. It has been a whole club effort to put this team on the field – our senior players have stepped up to help coach and develop this next generation of Buccaneers.

“No matter what happens on Sunday, we are proud of the team for what they have already achieved.”

The Geelong Buccaneers junior varsity team will now travel to Cranbourne to play in the Vic Bowl championship game this Sunday, where they will take on the Croydon Rangers from 9am.
