Baby Mateo a surprise gift for happy parents

- OLIVIA SHYING

A LARA family happily received an early Christmas gift when they welcomed baby Mateo just after midnight.

Mum Rebekah Andrews was spending Christmas Eve preparing for the next night’s dinner when she suddenly went into labour.

Little Mateo Andrews Abdollahi was the first Christmas baby of the day at Geelong hospital, born at 12.30am.

He weighed 3085g and measured 47 centimetres long.

Dad Ben Abdollahi and big brother Milo, 4, rushed to the hospital to visit the new addition to their little family.

Ms Andrews said plans to spend Christmas lunch at her dad’s house were quickly cancelled.

However, after being given the all clear by hospital staff, Ms Andrews was released from hospital so she could host her mum’s side for dinner.

Ms Andrews said the birth of her second child was a “bit of a surprise” but had added a dash of extra Christmas joy.

Mateo was due on January 4.

“He’s been sleeping the whole morning,” she said.

Milo was excited to meet his little brother and show him his new bike.

Mr Abdollahi said he was looking forward to his mother visiting from Sweden to meet Mateo in February.

“I’ve pretty excited and relieved that everything went well,” he said. “It was stressful but now we can relax and celebrate the joy of Christmas.”

The new little family had an extra surprise when they were handed a gift left by Rachael Smith and Jeremy Boyle, who welcomed their daughter Evie on Christmas Day 2018. This Geelong hospital tradition started in 2016.

“The gift and card were pretty special,” Mr Abdollahi said.
