Holiday hoons busted

A HOON caught driving more than 60km/h over the speed limit on the Princes Highway has had his car impounded.

The 26-year-old driver, a holder of an international licence, was clocked by police in Winchelsea at 161km/h in a 100km/h zone on Monday night.

The Colac man’s Mazda 323 was impounded after he was detected about 7pm. He will be charged on summons.

The Geelong Highway Patrol’s Sergeant Darren Murphy said the high speed was “ridiculous” but not uncommon.

“It’s a ridiculous speed to be driving down any road at,” he said.

“As much as we may think the road is safe and he’s capable, he’s not experienced anywhere near enough to do those sort of speeds.

“It is a very high speed but unfortunately we do seem to get a few of them certainly on the new highway between Colac and Geelong and they tend a lot of time to be international tourists.

“Whether they don’t have an understanding of our roads or our road laws, but we seem to catch quite a few of them.”

Meanwhile, on Friday, a

P-plater also had his car impounded after he was caught speeding near Lara.

Highway Patrol officers nabbed the driver at 153km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Princes Freeway.

Victorian police are running the statewide Operation Roadwise that focuses on keeping the community safe on the roads during the Christmas and New Year period.

With the operation due to run until January 6, Sgt Murphy said police would be out in force again today.

“Tomorrow (Boxing Day) will be a big day with people commuting between their homes to wherever they are going on holiday,” Sgt Murphy said.

“A lot of random breath testing and speed checks will take place making sure people travelling to and from destinations are driving safely and doing the right thing on the road.

“People need to be aware of the increased traffic which will then result in an increase in time to get to places.

“People will see an increased highway patrol presence across a lot of the major arterials to try and combat any dangerous driving or people doing anything stupid.”
