Lyon happy to fly under radar

- SHAYNE HOPE

NATHAN Lyon is the best spinner in the country by a mile, and that alone should be enough to keep him in the limelight.

But the man widely known as the ‘ GOAT’ of Australian cricket hopes the focus on fiery fast bowlers and the MCG pitch will allow him to fly under the radar ar leading into the Boxing g Day Test against New ew Zealand.

“Everyone wants to talk about the quicks and I’m pretty happy about that,” Lyon said. .

“We’ll keep ep talking about them and see how we go.” ”

Lyon has taken 13 wickets at 27.62 in three Tests against Pakistan and New Zealand this summer, including 4-63 in the Kiwis’ second innings in Perth.

Only Mitchell Starc (23) has claimed more scalps for Australia in the same period.

“I’m pretty happy with how I’m bowling at the moment. I’m very confident with the soft ball,” Lyon said.

“Being a part of this bowling group is pretty special. We’re all very close mates, which helps going out there and playing. We all want to see each other doing really well.”

But Lyon (pictured) won’t be part of that bowling group on next month’s ODI tour of India.

The off-spinner was axed along with short-form drawcards Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis.

“I’m definitely disappointed not to be on an Australian tour, tour,” Lyon said.

“My goals is alway ways to be picked on Australian t tours and to play as many games as we can.

“But I’ve h had a chat to ‘J ‘JL’ (Australian coa coach Justin Lange Langer). I know where h I stand. I know what I need to work on.

“So I’m obviously disappointed, but I know where I can get better and I look forward to going out there and playing to my best ability to put my hand up for that selection.”

Lyon, 32, is desperate to be part of Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign next year and will look to push his case for white-ball selection when he returns to the Big Bash League with the Sydney Sixers after the New Zealand Test series.
