Millman on track for Federer showdown

-

JOHN Millman has pulled off an upset win to advance to the third round of the Australian Open.

Millman toppled 31st seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland to earn a possible showdown with Roger Federer, who he upset in the 2018 US Open.

Millman won the match 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

Fellow Aussie Polmans fell to Serbian Dusan Lajovic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.

In the women’s draw Ajla Tomljanovic must overcome former world No.1 and twotime grand slam champion

“It was awesome,” Kyrgios said. “Obviously I felt like he wanted to help. I mean, I’m sure a lot of people appreciate that. I want to continue to do what I can. I’m not even thinking about my next round. I’m

Garbine Muguruza if she is to advance to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time.

It’s a tough task for the Queenslander, but the world No.52 has done it before and is approaching today’s secondround clash brimming with confidence.

Tomljanovic, who hadn’t made it past the first round at Melbourne Park in her past three attempts, dumped 31st seed Anastasija Sevastova out of the tournament 6-1, 6-1 yesterday. “I’m feeling good on the court and translating what going to do all the things right, recover, go again.

“Hopefully I can keep serving well. Hopefully I can win more sets.”

Kyrgios is also feeling the love from Australian fans and the good vibe continued when he said he’d love to go to the Tokyo Olympics and represent Australia in July.

It comes after Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates said he would like to have the 24-year-old there — four years after a bitter AOC fallout with Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic resulted in the pair not going to the Rio

I’ve been doing really well in practice into matches,” Tomljanovic said.

The pair has played each other twice before for one win each, Tomljanovic prevailing on a hard court in Miami six years ago before Muguruza’s rise to world No.1 in 2017.

Local wildcard Priscilla Hon must also beat a former world No.1 to make it to the third round, the Queenslander set to face 17th-seeded German and 2016 Open champion Angelique Kerber today. Hon defeated Ukrainian Kateryna Kozlova 6-3, 6-4 to advance, while three-time grand slam winner Kerber, who overcame a hamstring injury to take her place in the draw, prevailed against Italian qualifier Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-2 6-2.

Meanwhile, Australian wildcard Astra Sharma’s 2020 Australian Open campaign is over.

The 24-year-old was bundled out in straight sets yesterday in her delayed first-round clash against Estonian No. 28 seed Anett Kontaveit 6-0, 6-2.

It took Kontaveit just 19 minutes to wrap up the first set against the Australian.
