RESIDENTIAL ASPECT KEY TO AREA NEAR TERMINAL
IN developing the arrival space around the Spirit of Tasmania we can learn from the past.
Building offices on our foreshore without partial residential and tourism focus is a fail. The “Pyramid” building opposite the yacht club proves this.
Only after many years did we get residential buildings. Residents attract all services and are 24/7 not just day work visitors who are there nine hours and leave. This number of workers never get adequate parking or public transport access.
The new city hall is another example of a totally absurd location. Like our library, access and parking are abominable and the new city hall has offices leased with the same problems. Surveys reveal that post-virus many non-car owners and commuters will choose to buy cars and drive as virus safety cannot be guaranteed in public transport.
Talking of public transport, what are the chances of having a “virus safe recommended” distancing on a peakhour train to work in Melbourne? The abject failure of government action to get a fast train between Geelong and Melbourne is now apparent. We can’t even have enough carriages to pack into like sardines. Our train services, infrastructure, locomotives and carriages are pathetic at best.
I had to go to Werribee recently and had to travel via Melbourne and return — woeful transport planning that will now cripple our employment and economy.
