Tigers’ bowling bounty

Gun spinner signs

- JOSH BARNES

TORQUAY was already facing a tough task finding room for all its bowling recruits and now that task is even tougher with the addition of frontline spinner Terry Hill.

Left-arm spinner Hill has been a force in GCA1 in the past five seasons, taking 87 wickets in 47 matches with Murgheboluc and South Barwon.

Captain of the Swans in 2019-20, Hill decided the time was right to return to his junior club after seeing the names joining new captain-coach James Fisher at Torquay.

Alongside Fisher and Hill, the Tigers have signed five others and are hopeful of landing at least two more signatures.

Of those five, four are bowlers — including St Joseph’s pair Cameron Port and Brandon Purcell.

Hill, who will also be assistant coach at his new club, said having plenty of options with the ball would be a blessing as Torquay made a run at the finals.

“We are going to have that problem during the year that there are too many bowlers and what not, but it’s a good problem to have,” he said.

“At the end of the year it will be whoever is performing with the ball will be getting a game.

“Just having the recruits that came to Torquay in the first place that pushed me in that way.

“I know a lot of the local guys and I just thought it was time to come back to my junior club and give back to them while I still can.”

Torquay’s leadership group has started planning for the season virtually.

The club has also sought to bring its men and women’s teams together to help the club plan its attack on the 2020-21 season.

Hill said the club was committed to pushing for promotion out of GCA2.

“I had a good chat with James (Fisher) the other night,” he said.

“Every team wants to play hard cricket and all of those cliches, but we were speaking about more the finer details in terms of how we want to play cricket and have specific roles.”
