KIWI FLIGHT PATH CHANCE

- JESSICA COATES

AUSTRALIANS could travel to New Zealand as soon as July 1, a tourism body has advised.

The Tourism Restart Taskforce released information yesterday showing a “proof of concept” flight between Canberra and Wellington on July 1.

It’s understood the advice is “aspirational” and the final decision about borders would rest with the Australian and New Zealand governments.

Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings (pictured) said, while the news was “welcome”, he wasn’t popping champagne corks just yet.

“I think it’s optimistic, but it would be very welcome,” he said.

“Avalon would be perfect to get things back on track. We could bring passengers through the airport, get them checked and on a bus without any interaction with other passengers.”

Mr Giddings said travel between Australia and New Zealand would be a “shot in the arm” for the airport and wider Geelong region.

“People could come to Geelong, stay the night and fly out to New Zealand,” he said.

“Alternatively, we could host visitors here. Avalon is right on Geelong’s doorstep.”
