STEVE LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT

- JESSICA COATES

AFTER three decades working with special needs students, Steve Drayton knew it was time for a change.

After months studying while he worked, the Lara resident landed a job as a nightshift personal care assistant at an aged care facility.

“I’d worked for the Education Department working for kids with special needs and it was time for a change,” he said.

“I love so much about the job. If I can put a smile on a resident’s face, it just makes my day.”

Mr Drayton was nominated by his wife Christine as this week’s Unsung Hero, for his tireless efforts at work and home.

Despite what others might think, the night shift can get quite busy.

“It’s amazing how many residents stay awake at night,” he said. “You wouldn’t believe how many night owls we get.”

With Mr Drayton working nights and his wife working full-time during the day, he said the week could often be a bit of a “juggling act”.

“Since lockdown started I’ve been doing a lot more cooking at home with the kids,” he said. “It’s definitely a team effort.”
