Have say on new stadium

-

THE Surf Coast Shire is taking submissions to name its new multi-purpose indoor stadium, with the preferred name being Wurdi Baierr Stadium.

The proposed Wadawurrung name means “big gathering place” and was endorsed at a recent Surf Coast Shire Council meeting

The stadium, in Torquay north, will be formed by adding three courts to the existing single-court stadium at Surf Coast Secondary College.

Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation created a shortlist of four stadium names, which were considered by key people involved in the project.

Councillor Martin Duke said the precinct where the stadium would be located featured various facilities with indigenous names, such as Kurrambee Myaring Community Centre, Djila Tjarri Play and Skate Zone, Narrodya netball courts and Yuurrok soccer pitch. The $13.5 million stadium is expected to be completed before the end of 2020.
