AUTUMN R AIN TIPPED TO KEEP FALLING
AUTUMN was wet and chilly with the Geelong region recording its highest April rainfall since 2017.
Bureau of Meteorology data shows 85mm of rain fell at Geelong Racecourse last month — far exceeding the just 4mm that fell in the same month last year.
The only time since 2012 that the region recorded a wetter April was in 2017 when more than 151mm of rain fell.
The coldest day of the season as of yesterday, was recorded on May 1, with the mercury reaching just 13.4C.
According to the bureau’s preliminary seasonal summary the state is on track to record its wettest autumn in 31 years.
Overnight temperatures were close to average, but with many cool nights in March and May.
The bureau’s manager of long-range forecasting, Dr Andrew Watkins, predicted winter would also be wet and cold.
“Areas with a higher chance of above average rainfall are also looking at increased chances of cooler than average days because they are more likely to have cloud cover and more evaporative cooling in the coming months” Dr Watkins said.
“Conversely, it means our nights are more likely to be warmer than average, because that cloud cover will prevent heat from escaping during the evenings.”
The temperature is expect to reach a sunny 18C today and a slightly cooler 16C tomorrow.
