GIG HITS RIGHT NOTE
IT was comforting to learn yesterday that Geelong was about to host a major live music event, at Mount Duneed Estate. It was also exciting and a little daunting. A few hours after the state’s mask restrictions lifted, rock promoter Michael Gudinski revealed details of his 2021 Sounds Better Together gigs.
Billed as a week-long “celebration of live music in Victoria”, the carefully planned concerts will feature homegrown artists, and start with twin shows on Saturday, one at Mount Duneed Estate and one at Yarra Valley’s Rochford Wines.
It’s fitting that Geelong — which has produced some of the best frontwomen in Aussie rock history (think Chrissy Amphlett and Adalita Srsen) will host a bill dominated by female performers.
Geelong educated chart-topper Missy Higgins will join the nation’s biggest international act of recent years, Tones and I, as well as doctorturned rising singer-songwriter Gordi at the Mount Duneed show. Warrnambool’s Didirri is the only male in the line-up.
At less than $50 a ticket, live music fans — who have been starved of entertainment for a year — should seize the opportunity to attend the gig, but make sure they follow all the social distancing protocols. If they do that, the chances are more gigs will start to be booked in our region.
