RICHIE’S RUN REMARKABLE

- JOSH BARNES

A STREAK that could stretch beyond 500 days will be finished with a brutal week when Richie Egan runs seven marathons in seven days.

The “obsessed” runner started jogging at least 5km every day on February 1 last year and is aiming to carry it through to June, when he will complete the marathons in seven states and territories for the charity Bravehearts.

Egan jumped at the chance to help the charity — which works to prevent child sexual assault and exploitation — as a way of inching closer to his goal of completing 100 marathons.

The 21-year-old ran his 12th 42km distance on New Year’s Eve.

“The plan is to keep the running streak alive until I finish the sevenseven-seven,” he said.

“I think that might be the perfect timing because by that stage it would be up to about 500 days and it would be a really satisfying time to end it.

“Wanting to do 100 marathons, if I could tick over seven in a week that would be pretty good.”

A group of runners will be flown around Australia to complete the marathons, culminating with the Gold Coast Marathon.

“It will be awesome to meet some like-minded people and I have touched base with some people who are also on a 100marathon journey,” Egan said.

To prepare for the gruelling week, the Newtown resident said he would likely up his distance covered from about 100km a week to about 150-200km.
