Webster builds to Round 1

- LACHIE YOUNG

GEELONG midfielder Becky Webster is banking on a strong running program and a new assistant coach to help her take her game to new heights.

Webster (pictured) was one of the Cats’ best in the 21-point loss to Melbourne on Saturday in her team’s practice match at GMHBA Stadium.

It was reward for her hard work in lockdown but her challenge will be to emulate her efforts when Geelong is playing for premiership points.

She said having the help of Cats assistant coach Dan Lowther was proving beneficial in her aim to play a bigger midfield role.

“A lot of the off-season when I was at home I wanted to work on my fitness and transition running,” Webster said.

“I think that is an area of my game that I really wanted to improve on.

“So that is something I worked really hard on, and being back with the coaches, we have been really lucky to have Dan Lowther as our midfield coach, and having his insight.

“We have some new roles in and it is about being aggressive in the contest and owning our space, so that is what we will look to do and what I will look to do this season.”

Webster said she and her teammates would let the coaching staff manage Round 1 preparations.

“We will have a look at their style of play, and they have a new coach, but Hoody (coach Paul Hood) will do a lot of that for us and prepare us for what we need to know,” she said.

“But we are really focusing on ourselves and what we can control and how we want to play.

“That is how we are going to win. It is not about trying to stop the other team, it is about us scoring and playing the brand we want to play.”
