Grim mystery deepens

- MILES PROUST

HUMAN remains found at a Norlane property at the weekend are believed to belong to a 26-year-old man whose remains were first discovered nearby in 2019.

Police attended the property in Geelong’s northern suburbs on Saturday after the latest remains were found.

Police said they would be taken to the coroner’s office for examination.

The first discovery was made in September 2019, when a resident whose property backs onto a Marnoo Court home was excavating his backyard.

The man found the remains hidden in a camping swag among a collection of catalogues under a chair.

It’s believed the man was trying to get to a sewer pipe when he knocked over the swag on the fence line of the property.

He took his discovery to a local police station after initially thinking they were dog bones when he saw a couple poking out of the swag. At the time it was reported the man saw a femur, hip bone and a skull covered in long, red, shoulder-length hair.

A relative said at the time

the man was shocked and upset by the horrific find.

Neighbours said in 2019 the property at Marnoo Court had been vacant for several

months. They said the last tenants at the property — a man and a woman — delivered catalogues for a living, but “vanished” from the property

several months before the human remains were found.

Police confirmed the bones found in 2019 belonged to a 26-year-old Norlane man,

and said the remains discovered on Saturday were from the same person.

Their investigation ongoing.
