Queenscliff rolling along

- LACHIE YOUNG BOWLS

QUEENSCLIFF made it two from two to start the Premier Bowls season after taking care of City of Geelong on Saturday.

The Borough won three of four rinks (98 to 53) to claim 16 points and remain undefeated alongside Highton and Ocean Grove.

Skip Anthony Donohue praised his team’s performance and said wins on the road would be vital in this shortened season.

“It is a perfect start for us, you can’t do much more than what we have been doing,” Donohue said.

“Wins away from home are going to be gold this year, I reckon, in a shortened season.

“We lost on the last end in our rink, and Ron Sutherland and Lance Kelly played well for them, but the other three were pretty well in front for most of the day and it was a pretty good team effort over all.”

Queenscliff next hosts Ocean Grove in what shapes as a match-of-the-round contest.

Donohue said he did not expect to get any major advantage on the home deck, given how much both teams knew of each other.

“We are back on home soil and Ocean Grove and Highton, and probably Eastern Park, are the teams to beat,” he said.

“Ocean Grove has been a fantastic team since Matt (Flapper) has been there, which must be eight or nine years.

“We have had some great tussles at their place and our place and I would expect Saturday to be another one.

“We play at Ocean Grove a lot during the year and their members play down here a lot as well, so the home ground advantage won’t be much.

“And even though they have a couple of new players, we have played each other a lot in the past 10 or 15 years, so we know each other fairly well.”
