HIT-RUN SHOCK

- CHAD VAN ESTROP

A TEEN driver has escaped with minor injuries from a horror crash she says was caused by a hit-run driver.

Kaitlin Singleton, 19, was driving to work in Ocean Grove on Tuesday about 5.45am when she said she was sideswiped by a darkcoloured ute on Barwon Heads Road.

“I was driving on Barwon Heads Road and a car was coming towards me and they half came into my lane and nudged me and I spun around and crashed into a pole,” Ms Singleton said from Geelong hospital on Wednesday.

“As soon as the car stopped, I was in shock. I just opened my door and got out and sat on the ground.”

Ms Singleton was in hospital with three broken fingers and a broken bone in her hand, and waiting for a doctor to decide if she needed surgery.

Ms Singleton’s father Jason said his daughter was driving towards Barwon Heads and “the next thing she knew she was spinning uncontrollably”.

“It looked like a dark ute that came into her lane as she was driving towards Barwon Heads,” he said.

“It must have clipped her because the next thing she realised she was spinning out of control and then she’s gone straight into the telephone pole on the passenger’s side and (the crash) has just ripped the side of the car off. She’s very lucky.

“It’s despicable. I don’t know what kind of humanity this person has, they would have definitely known they’ve hit a car.

“And for them to keep going, they mustn’t have a conscience at all.”

Mr Singleton said his daughter was able to get out of the car after the crash.

“She got out and walked over to the side of the road and there was no one around,” he said.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Liz Mellino said: “Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam footage or information about it is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report at crimestoppers vic.com.au
