Cats’ chance to break through

- LACHIE YOUNG

GEELONG will be presented with its best chance yet to score its maiden win of the AFLW season on Friday night, but midfielder Becky Webster says her side cannot afford to take Richmond lightly.

The Cats are winless from four games and have kicked just seven goals in 16 quarters.

The Tigers are also yet to secure a victory but got within five points of Carlton last week.

Webster said while it was a winnable game, Geelong would not let the potential outcome distract it from what needed to be done to take the four points.

“We are going to go out there and play our brand of footy,” Webster (pictured) said.

“When we have been playing well, we have been getting the ball inside-50. It is just about converting on the scoreboard.

“We will have a bit of a look at Richmond and how they play but we have constantly been focusing on ourselves the past few weeks. We play our best football when we play for each other so Hoody (coach Paul Hood) will be reiterating that this week.

“If you go in cocky or expecting the win, it won’t happen, so we are leading up to a good four quarters of football, and hopefully we can do that on Friday.”

Webster’s own form saw her earn the Round 4 nomination for the NAB Rising Star award.

It came on the back of a stellar performance in the loss to St Kilda, where she amassed a game-high 24 disposals, as well as eight marks and three tackles.

The 20-year-old completed a gruelling pre-season and the benefits have been evident.

“It was definitely a surprise,” Webster said of her nomination.

“I think I did all that work to make sure I could get to contests and be able to influence around the ground more. I feel like I am doing that so that was the main thing that I wanted to focus on and to help the team. That was probably one of my better games I have played though.”
