Another virus warning

- TAMARA MCDONALD

DOCTORS are warning people to protect themselves against a nasty mosquitoborne virus over the long weekend after a surge in cases.

Ross River virus can cause joint swelling and pain, fatigue and muscle aches that can persist for many months.

Greater Geelong has already recorded 94 Ross River virus cases this year, smashing the number of cases reported in its worst year on record in less than three months.

The Surf Coast has recorded 83 cases since the start of the year and could surpass its worst year on record when 93 cases were reported for 2017 — the highest number of annual cases shown in Health Department data going back to 1991.

Local GP and Western Victoria Primary Health Network clinical spokeswoman Anne Stephenson said doctors were hearing about cases along the entire Surf Coast, with Anglesea and Aireys Inlet seeming to have the highest numbers.

“The most important preventative measure is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes,” Dr Stephenson said.

“While we hope people will heed public health warnings to protect themselves from mozzie bites, we expect more cases to be diagnosed over coming weeks. The risk of exposure to mosquitoes carrying Ross River virus is still significant.”
