JETS ARE FIRING

LARA EYES TOP FOUR

- LACHIE YOUNG

LARA will aim to use the momentum is has gained from recent wins over City of Geelong and Queenscliff when it takes on ladder leader Highton on Saturday.

The Jets sit in fifth spot on the Premier Bowls table but a win against the Hawks would keep them in the hunt for a finals berth.

Skip Brendan Umbers said his team was looking to maintain the positive energy it had created in recent weeks.

“We have just been starting to go into matches trying to focus on the positives and taking everything out of how we played the weeks before,” Umbers said.

“It is really starting to hit home that we have still got a chance at this. My rink has bowled really well for me most of the season and myself and Johnny (O’Donnell) are starting to step up and take leadership of the group.

“That is really starting to take effect and everyone is coming along with us. We are getting that positive vibe and people have got some confidence in themselves.”

Umbers is coming off a Champion of Champions win on Sunday, where he came from the clouds to overcome Daryl Kitchin in the final.

It has been a similar tale in several of Lara’s wins this season and the skip said he was confident the Jets would be hard to stop if they were to get on a roll on Saturday.

“When we played against Bell Post Hill and had the tie with them, we really finished off strong and it was hard for them to match us,” he said. “It was the same against Queenscliff; Queenscliff jumped us at the start but my rink started well and then everyone gained some momentum.

“Once you gain momentum, I think if we can try to replicate those performances and put some pressure on, we give ourselves a really good chance of cracking into that top four.”
