FIREYS FIGHT ‘SUSPICIOUS’ BLAZE IN CBD

- CHAD VAN ESTROP OLIVIA SHYING

FIRE investigators will probe the cause of a CBD blaze that sent a large plume of smoke into the sky on Monday evening.

About 25 firefighters were called about 5.15pm to a Bellerine Street property that has previously been occupied by squatters.

Due to the rundown state of the house, some firefighters doused the flames from above, using a “cherry picker” set up behind the property.

Fire Rescue Victoria commander David Mounier said the cause of the fire was suspicious, and seven trucks were called to the scene.

“It would appear the fire has started at the front of the house,” Mr Mounier said.

He said crews found the house “heavily involved” in fire when they arrived and worked to protect nearby houses.

The backyard was littered with rubbish, windows and doors were boarded up and the rear of the property was blocked by a temporary fence.

A NEW group of leaders has been appointed to serve the Barwon Regional Partnership’s next term.

Deakin University vicechancellor Iain Martin will chair the group.

The state government established the nine regional partnerships in 2016 and committees are appointed for fouryear terms.

Professor Martin will be joined by a diverse and highcalibre group drawn from sectors that include health, business, innovation, environment, social and community services, planning and regional development.

Barwon Water managing director Tracey Slatter is deputy chair, with other members including Bill Mithen, Corrina Eccles, Frances Diver, Jennifer Cromarty, Lisa Kingman, Melinda Kennedy, Nat Anson and Nick Stanley.

They will be joined by local council chief executive officers, Regional Development Australia representatives and senior state government officials.

Professor Martin said he looked forward to working to ensure the region could seize opportunities and address challenges in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. “Our region has incredible potential and our task is to help ensure that this is realised for everyone across Barwon,” he said.
