10 and eyeing Div 3

Whiz-kid Steven to make history

- TOBY PRIME

IT might need to be seen to be believed.

Ten-year-old Steven Wang will become the youngest player to play in a senior pennant side this year when he lines up for Clifton Springs.

The Chinese wunderkind (pictured) grabbed headlines last year when he shot 74 around the Bellarine Peninsula course, a score most club golfers would take at some stage in their lifetime.

“I’ve never seen a golfer like him,” Clifton Springs Division 3 pennant captain Keegan Dean said. “We’ve got a very strong team in Division 3 this year. Steven’s handicap is currently at about nine and he’s on the brink of making the Division 3 team.

“He’ll be rotated throughout the season. Everyone is very excited and everyone likes what they see.”

It’s believed no golfer has been younger than Steven in playing in an SWGA pennant match. He moved to Australia last year to be mentored by world-renowned coach Kel Llewellyn.

Dean hoped Steven would put fear in his opponents. “I think they’re going to be worried,” he said. “They’re going to be concerned that they may lose to a 10-year-old.”

Steven is attending Geelong Grammar and looms as an exciting world-class talent.

Dean said the youngster was an “outstanding” prospect. “Steven is very accurate off the tee and quite long for his age and size,” he said.

“He’s very accurate.

“His short game is phenomenal. He works on it night and day. He’s always around the pro shop, the chipping green, the putting green working on it. His iron play is just outstanding for someone of his age.”

SWGA pennant starts on Sunday, with finals for all divisions scheduled for May 23.
