Dealer jailed 18 months

A GEELONG man has been jailed after he was exposed as a drug dealer.

Daniel Scott, 29, was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 months’ jail after pleading guilty to dozens of charges including drug trafficking.

Geelong Magistrates Court heard the father of one was involved in a spate of crimes between late 2019 and January 2021.

That included a police drug bust in April 2020 when Scott was intercepted while travelling as a passenger in a car through Norlane.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Craig Williams said police found he was carrying more than $8000 in cash, about 30g of the drug ice, a set of scales and deal bags.

Police also seized a quantity of the drug GHB, mobile phones and a metal torch containing a hidden blade.

His arrest came six days after Scott was found asleep at the wheel of a car parked in the middle of a roundabout on Garden Street, Geelong.

The court heard police instructed Scott to move the car to the side of the road, but he took off quickly.

It was one of several serious driving incidents involving Scott, who continued committing crimes after being granted bail in July 2020.

On December 12, Scott drove erratically through the Norlane Hotel car park while fleeing police and failed to stop at a train crossing as the boom gates came down.

The next day, police spotted him driving the same vehicle on Creamery Road, Bell Post Hill. The court was told he “panicked” and sped off, reaching 135km/h on the wrong side of the road.

Scott has been in custody since January 25 when he was arrested after a 20-minute foot chase around Norlane.

Defence lawyer Hollie Lyons said most of Scott’s crime spree took place while he was drug affected. She told the court her client had tried “nearly every” illicit drug, but was motivated to get sober and forge a better relationship with his daughter.

Magistrate Franz Holzer said Scott’s offending warranted time in prison.

“There were huge risks to members of the community in a whole lot of respects and huge risks to police officers who are just going about their ordinary duties,” he said.

Scott has already served six months of his jail sentence.
