Faulty freezer identified as cause of devastating fire
FIRE investigators have identified an overheated freezer as the “probable cause” of a “devastating” blaze that destroyed two Apollo Bay businesses and severely damaged a third.
“This is a timely reminder that it is important to maintain good airflow around electrical items and appliances,” a Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) spokeswoman said.
“Only use certified electrical tradespeople to repair damaged or faulty electrical appliances, wiring or equipment.”
Fire crews were called to the Collingwood Street blaze at 3.17am on Wednesday.
Apollo Surf Coast Chinese — which is understood to have been closed down over COVID lockdowns — and Blue Bird Restaurant were destroyed in the fire.
A third building, which is home to Wild Dog Timber and Hardware, was also badly damaged.
The blaze had already destroyed one store and was rapidly spreading by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.
It took until 6.30am for crews to bring the fire under control.
At least one other business has closed temporarily while awaiting the outcome of potential smoke damage.
Witnesses described flames 10-15m tall and embers blowing down the street.
Colac Otway Mayor Kate Hanson said on Wednesday the fires were a “devastating blow” to Apollo Bay as it recovered from a year of COVID lockdowns.
“Our thoughts are with the Apollo Bay community and particularly the businesses and staff directly affected by this fire,” she said.
“The Apollo Bay and Colac Otway community has proven its strength and resilience before and will rally to support you.”
Police declared on Wednesday evening the cause of the blaze was believed to be nonsuspicious just hours after establishing a crime scene at the site.
Blue Bird Restaurant, which was destroyed in the fire, was more than 100 years old.
