Dealer: I’ll go straight

- RUSTY WOODGER

A DRUG dealer who came close to being shot at his Norlane home has told a court he now wants to live a normal life.

Christopher Foy, 30, appeared on Tuesday in Geelong Magistrates Court, where he was sentenced to a jail term for crimes that included trafficking cannabis, possessing a firearm and multiple assaults.

The father of three’s life as a drug dealer came to light after shots were fired at his Thompson Road home in January 2020.

Foy had responded to a knock at his front door when he was confronted by a group of men, one of whom was brandishing a gun. He quickly shut the door before a total of four shots were discharged, including one that went into the front door and another into a wall.

Foy later told police his only explanation for the incident was that he had been selling a “few sticks” of cannabis and the group may have been trying to “roll” him.

Appearing in court on Tuesday via video link from prison, where he had spent nearly five months on remand, Foy said he was now keen to turn his life around.

“I want to address myself and get myself fixed up,” he said.

“I don’t want to go back to the life I was living.

“I want to get out there and make something of myself and not be a stupid individual, if you know what I mean.”

Magistrate Jelena Popovic sentenced Foy to a 147-day jail term, which was recorded as time served, allowing Foy to walk free from jail.

He was also put on a 15month community correction order that includes treatment for drug use and programs to address reoffending.

Ms Popovic said while Foy had pleaded guilty to “significant” offending, she had also taken into account his limited criminal history and the onerous conditions in custody due to COVID-19.
