A TRIO of innovative projects is set to put Deakin University at the forefront of aquaculture research and water sustainability.

Higher Education Minister Gayle Tierney will announce on Friday that the state government will help fund the $9.8m AquaFi innovation centre, a $7.8m water management upgrade at the Waurn Ponds campus and a $4.5m redevelopment of the Queenscliff Marine Science Centre.

It is understood the state government has contributed $6m to the projects in a partnership with Deakin.

The proposed hub will explore animal nutrition and environment when expanding fish and seafood farming.

Deakin vice chancellor Iain Martin welcomed the investment.

“These projects are an extension of our investment in regional Victoria and commitment to sustainability and will also enhance our existing research capabilities,” he said.

New laboratories, teaching facilities and high-speed internet will be offered as part of the Marine Science Centre upgrade.

Ms Tierney said the projects would help boost enrolments and create scholarship opportunities for students.

“These exciting projects will push the boundaries of water science research but also provide great learning and job opportunities for Victorians,” she said.

Melbourne-based Root Partnerships will carry out construction, kicking off later this year and finishing in 2022.

The projects have been funded through the state government’s $350m higher education fund, supporting universities with research infrastructure and capital works.

South Barwon MP Darren Cheeseman lauded the funding as a win for the region.

“This investment will put Geelong at the forefront of water and aquaculture research — and ensure a sustainable future,” he said.
