LOCAL FOOTY ANZAC DAY PREVIEW
TWO St Joseph’s juniors are in line to make their senior debuts in the blockbuster Anzac Day clash against South Barwon on Sunday.
Defenders Angus Humphrey and Oscar Morrison are among the possible inclusions for Paul Carson’s side, with as many as four changes from the
Round 1 team.
Morrison is listed with Geelong Falcons and has played the first three rounds in the NAB League.
But the under-19 competition has a bye this weekend, allowing him to return to local football.
Tom Zampatti (knee), Riley Kershaw and Spiro Alesios (hamstring) are the confirmed outs from the 69-point defeat against Colac on Saturday night.
Joeys captain Alex Hickey said the club would back in its depth to cover the losses.
“We could potentially have four changes. It looks like James (Hickey) is going to be out as well through injury,” Hickey said.
“We had one left on the bench before quarter-time, which made it pretty hard.
“The beauty of it is that everyone coming in is ready to go.
“That’s the luxury we have at the moment, especially with lots of young kids coming through the colts (that are) ready to put their hands up.”
The GFL clash will be one of three Anzac Day games across the region.
Bannockburn will host North Geelong in the GDFL and Drysdale will clash with Portarlington at Mortimer Oval in the BFL.
The St Joseph’s-South Barwon Anzac Day clash was first staged in 2008, with Joeys winning the past six fixtures to hold a 6-5 record.
South Barwon co-captain Matt Caldow revealed its football manager Jack Stevens, who served with the Australian Defence Force, addressed the group this week on the importance of Anzac Day.
“He came and spoke to our group about what Anzac Day means to him, and the significance of the day,” Caldow said.
“It’s a day of remembrance and a celebration of what it is to be Australian. And the values they showed at Gallipoli, they’re values we want to live by and take into our everyday lives and sporting clubs.”
