A WINCHELSEA man has refused to appear in court after being charged with ramming two police cars at a Geelong service station on Sunday night.

Oaklee Carney, 20, is accused of deliberate­ly driving into the police vehicles after being surrounded by officers about 10.30pm at APCO North Geelong.

Police say they had to smash a window of a Holden sedan and deploy OC spray to diffuse the heated incident at the service station on Thompson Road.

Mr Carney has since been charged with offences including reckless conduct endanger serious injury and aggravated intentiona­l exposure of police officer to risk by driving.

He was due to appear in Geelong Magistrate­s Court for a filing hearing on Monday, but the court was told he was refusing to leave his cell. In a statement, Victoria Police said the incident on Sunday unfolded after officers noticed a vehicle displaying incorrect number plates.

“The driver was filling up his car when a check of the registrati­on plate revealed the plates to be false,” police said.

“Police pulled their vehicles to the front and rear of the Holden sedan and asked the driver to stop so they could speak with him.

“The 20-year-old man jumped into his car and allegedly reversed and then drove forward into both police cars in an attempt to leave the scene.”

Police allege they found “a quantity of drugs and significan­t quantity of cash” in Mr Carney’s car after he was arrested.

He has also been charged with possess cannabis, drive while disqualifi­ed, theft, fail to stop on police request and resist officer.

Defence lawyer Stephanie Mawby asked the court to note custody management issues for her client including depression and anxiety.

Magistrate Peter Mellas remanded Mr Carney in custody for a committal mention on August 6.
