Speeding drivers busted

- OLIVIA SHYING

A DRIVER clocked travelling 44km/h over the limit was one of 50 motorists caught speeding during an early-morning crackdown across Geelong roads on Thursday.

Police have expressed frustration at the number of drivers prepared to put their lives and the lives of others at risk by travelling at dangerous speeds on arterial roads and major highways.

Geelong highway patrol officers were out in force in the early hours of Thursday in a bid to stop speeding in light traffic.

Shocking speeds detected by police included a man driving 44 km/h above the limit.

Acting Sergeant Glenn Stephens said the 63-year-old North Geelong man was intercepted at 104km/h in a 60km/h zone along Thompson Road, Norlane, at 7.40am.

The driver was issued with a $702 fine and automatically lost his licence for six months.

Police also intercepted an Anglesea man, in his 50s, caught doing 92km/h in a 60km/h zone along Horseshoe Bend Road at 11.15am.

He was fined $537 and his licence was suspended for three months.

A 34-year-old Grovedale man also lost his licence after he was detected at 109km/h in a 70km/h zone along Melbourne Road, North Geelong, about 5am. He was issued with a $620 fine and lost his licence for six months.

Sergeant Stephens said police were shocked at the large number of speeding drivers travelling across the region.

He said among the 50 infringements issued, five motorists also lost their licences.

Another driver was fined for running a red arrow.

Sergeant Stephens said police would continue to conduct operations across the region’s road network.

“A lot of drivers said they were travelling at speeds because they were running late for work. Plan your trip so you don’t have to do that,” Sergeant Stephens said.
