Cops told to pay for Laidley pic leak

ELEVEN police officers have been ordered to pay former AFL coach Dani Laidley up to $3000 each in compensation after her mug shot was leaked.

Victoria Police has finally revealed the punishment handed down to the remaining five officers — all senior constables — who faced an internal discipline hearing over the leak, which was described as “appalling” by the chief commissioner.

In total, 11 police officers faced the internal discipline board for their role in distributing images and information, a police spokeswoman said.

She said each was ordered to pay Ms Laidley monetary compensation and will participate in a Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission “Respecting Dignity” course at their own time and cost. They were also put on a good behaviour bond for 12 months.

The 11 officers involved in circulating the photos of Ms Laidley and information relating to her arrest ranged in rank from constable to sergeant.

Three police officers and a police custody officer are also facing criminal charges after allegedly leaking photos and information about the former star footballer and North Melbourne coach in custody.

Ms Laidley is also suing Victoria Police, alleging she was exposed to “humiliation and ridicule” when officers leaked photos of her in custody.

Ms Laidley, previously known as Dean, changed her name after gender transition.

The photos of Ms Laidley in custody were allegedly circulated in a WhatsApp group before being widely shared on social media after her arrest.

Ms Laidley was wearing a wig and make-up at St Kilda police station after being arrested in May last year. At least 274 Victoria Police employees were interviewed in relation to the scandal.
