Modewarre scrap happy

Warriors’ Worpel a standout

- DANIEL BREEN

SMALL forward Tom Worpel was best afield as Modewarre won a brutal encounter against Drysdale by 34 points.

Worpel booted five goals for Modewarre in a match where time and space were at a premium, with the Warriors prevailing 13.14 (92) to 7.16 (58).

Modewarre coach Chris Hickey said while fans were not treated to “the prettiest game of football”, he was delighted to get the points against a fellow BFL finals contender.

“Most spectators would have thought it was scrappy at best but we were pretty happy to get away with the points,” Hickey said.

“It was important for us to beat another side that’s probably going to figure in the finals series, and winning at home is always pretty important.

“It was a tough day and there’ll definitely be some sore bodies. I’d hate to see the tackle counts. It was a fiercely contested style and Drysdale have got some big bodies.”

The Warriors were a step ahead for much of the afternoon, with strong second and third quarters putting the game almost beyond doubt by the final change.

Drysdale, off the back of huge games from James Breust (five goals), Mitch McGuire and Lauchlan Dalgleish, fought back gamely during the final term but were scored against on the counter attack as the Warriors held sway.

In a genuine scrap, Worpel’s five majors and forward pressure stood out.

Big man Matthew Kasparian and defenders Oliver Butler and Adam Boshevski were also contributors for the Warriors.

“Tom (Worpel) has been a really good small forward for us this year. He’s been a good player at Modewarre for a while but he’s averaging the best part of three goals a game, so that’s really pleasing and his pressure has also been really good,” Hickey said.

“He was struggling with some injuries before Christmas, so he was restricted a lot with his pre-season but we’re really happy with the way he’s performed and he gives us another avenue to goal, which is really important.”

ANGLESEA v OCEAN GROVE

ANGLESEA made a statement against Ocean Grove, with dominant first and third quarter displays helping the Roos to a 51-point victory, 13.12 (90) to 5.9 (39).

Evergreen Roo Dale

Carson was best afield.

TORQUAY v QUEENSCLIFF

TWIN towers Paul McMahon and Lucas Anderson booted 10 goals between them as Torquay defeated Queenscliff

by 97 points, 21.15 (141) to 7.2 (44). Tom Diamond was best afield for the Tigers, who remain undefeated.

NEWCOMB v GEELONG AMATEUR

NEWCOMB returned to the winners’ list, powering home in the final term to defeat Geelong Amateur by 14 points.

Kieren Bourke and Brenton Rees were huge as the Power overturned a 13-point deficit at the final change to win 11.13

(79) to 9.11 (65) and break a 26-match losing streak against Ammos.

PORTARLINGTON v BARWON HEADS

BARWON Heads was super mean in defence but a touch wayward in front of goal, defeating Portarlington 20.23 (143) to 2.1 (13). The Seagulls kept the Demons scoreless to half-time and had 14 individual goalkickers in a quality team performance.
